Viruses Made Beautiful

As famous designer Saul Bass said "design is thinking made visual."

It is my belief that this quote succinctly states why a lot of designers become designers in the first place. We like being clever. And fair enough everyone has something they tend to take particular pride in. Some might call it vanity. I'll full on admit I'm vain about being knowledgable in a variety of subjects. Let's be kind and call it my inner nerd coming out.

I like learning constantly and I read pretty much non-stop. But I get even more excited when design OR fine art (neither is exclusive of the other after all) can be combined with complex subject matter and a whole new understanding or vision comes out of the collaboration.

That's one of the reasons I find myself so taken with these glass pieces by artist Luke Jerram. That and having taken glass blowing I know just how complex and labour intensive they were to design and make. Working with Virologists from the University of Bristol he created his own exquisite versions of deadly pathogens such as AIDS and Swine Flu.

Avian Flu

And geeze doesn't that just make you marvel at the beauty of Microbiology. See artistry is everywhere. Even in killer diseases.
